So This Just Happened...

So, I have some big news to fill you guys in on...

On Friday we officially sold our first home. 

You know the one....

Crazy, right!?  Lord knows we loved that house and poured our hearts, sweat, tears and imagination into every square inch, but on August 30th a new plan unveiled itself to us and we had to jump. In a nutshell, another house in our neighborhood that we had long admired went up for sale and we decided to pop into the open house on a whim. Well, one thing led to another and by the end of that week we were under contract on the new house with the contingency of selling ours.

A "Coming Soon" sign went up in our yard and before the house officially went on the market it was under contract.

W H I R L W I N D

It's hard to believe how fast this whole thing has gone down. While all of the paperwork, inspections, appraisals, etc...were happening between the two houses we kind of went along, living our lives business as usual. You know, working full time, being pregnant, all that fun stuff. Then, last Sunday we got busy packing, wrapping and getting everything organized for the big move. For such a small little house we sure managed to acquire some stuff, so thankfully Brent's Mom, Cindy, was in town to help us get everything done. I've learned one is not nearly as useful and or productive whilst donning a major gut (me and my baby bump).

The plan was to close on both houses on Friday, meaning we had to be out of house #1 by 10:00 a.m. Friday morning. Thus all of our moving happened on Thursday. It was crazy fast paced and we spent all day Friday, Saturday and some of today getting unpacked and organized. My family came by yesterday and everyone pitched in to empty as many boxes as possible and things are really starting to feel relatively calm around here.

Speaking of "here" the new house is in the same neighborhood, only 10 houses down from our first house! It is the perfect spot for us to really settle in and raise a family and we are still pinching ourselves that it's ours! I can't wait to give you the formal tour, but for now here is our obligatory, WE JUST BOUGHT A HOUSE PICTURE for our Second Home:

Red Red....Crib

I can not believe I am officially 7 months pregnant. SEVEN MONTHS! In all seriousness this pregnancy has been pretty dang easy. I really have no complaints other than the fact that it's going by really fast and I pretty much feel behind 24/7. But you know one thing we are on top of? 

The Crib. 

Back in August I mentioned we were tossing around the idea of using the crib Brent and his brothers used when they were babies which also happens to be the crib their mom, Cindy, used when she was a baby. Bottom line...the crib is no spring chicken. Old is great in interiors, in fact sometimes I prefer it, however when it comes to babies, old can actually be dangerous. There are several features prevalent in older cribs that have been known to hurt babies, the two main concerns are:

1. The distance between crib slats and spindles should not be too wide. The minimum size is 2 3/8" wide. Anything larger than this poses the risk of the baby slipping through completely or the torso slipping through which would trap the babies head. 
2. The drop-side. The ability to drop the crib is convenient but over time the hardware can give way and a gap can form between the mattress and the drop side creating a dangerous area where babies can become trapped and suffocate. 

So, we set out to DIY some fixes to these concerns and give this crib a fun new life for our little mini.

To solve the issue of the spindles being spaced too far apart we purchased wooden dowels at Home Depot to place in between each spindle. Not only would this bridge the gap, but I was excited for the aesthetic interest it would add to the crib. 

Brent cut each dowel to the correct height and then drilled holes and slipped the dowels into place. 

With the new dowels installed we drug all four sides of the crib to the back yard to paint. 

As for the color we talked about several options but I had one color on the brain...RED. I know, it's a little random for a baby room, but I love the color red, it's happy and bright and just seemed like the perfect choice for this room. Especially considering it could work for a boy or a girl. Our red of choice? Stiletto Love by Behr.

To tackle this paint job we enlisted our favorite tool - the paint gun! 

It is amazing how much quicker the whole painting process goes with this gun. In a matter of minutes one whole panel was evenly sprayed. Brent sprayed one coat, let it dry an then flipped the pieces over to spray the other side. 

Once each side had dried Brent created a little homemade rig to hold the pieces vertically so he could easily get all of the sides, nooks and crevices. 

Meanwhile I was busy tending to the metal pieces. The crib came with a metal vertical rail for the drop part of the crib to slide up and down. While we planned to nix the ability to actually move the sides up and down we wanted to keep the metal rail for the cool factor. So I sprayed the metal rails, all hardware and the metal spring that the mattress will sit on in this bright silver paint. 

We hung fishing line between the deck and a tree for the metal pieces to hang on for easy access and full coverage as I sprayed them. In our experience this is the best approach for spray paint - less runs, even coverage and faster drying.

Once everything was painted we left the crib and it's parts outside to bake in the sun for a few hours to get nice and dry. Later that night we brought everything back inside and Brent began assembling.

To solve the issue of the drop sides we drilled the side walls of the crib into the head and foot boards to ensure the sides would not move. 

And finally.....

Pretty dramatic transformation, eh? We love how the crib turned out and can't wait to add the bedding and other finishing touches. Speaking of finishing touches, we had our first baby shower Saturday! It was so much fun and we got so many cute, adorable, useful, awesome, practical and fun things!  It kills me how the cuteness factor of basic things like say, a sock,  is literally amplified by about 200% when seen in miniature form. CUTENESS OVERLOAD OVER HERE and there isn't even a baby roaming around yet.

Sunroom Turned Home Office Reveal

Y'all, I love our home office. Like really, really love it.  And that feels really good to say after having worked on it off and on for over a year!!  I know you guys are ready for a little less talk and a little more SHOW ME THE DANG ROOM ALREADY!!! So, without further adieu, let me show you around...

HERE SHE IS!

This is the view of the space from the living room. A little spurt of happy, eh? 

We had Bell Kitchen & Bath Studios (the company I work for) make custom cabinetry for the office. Because we really needed this space to be equal parts functional and pretty, we spent a lot of time brainstorming ways to make this cabinetry provide AS much organizational and functional opportunities as possible. 

We only have one full depth drawer in the space, so we designed dividers to custom fit inside the drawer so everything kept inside would have it's own little nook. In general items are more likely to find their way back to their home after use if they actually have a designated home to come back to. Write that down, it's a fact!

Underneath this drawer we have a cabinet with a printer pullout installed. 

We love this feature because it keeps the printer off the countertop, but easily accessible when we are ready to use.

We incorporated two knee spaces along the wall so Brent and I would each have our own area.Two cabinets were installed between us to help differentiate the two spaces. In the first cabinet we have two file drawers.

This drawer makes me feel like such an adult.  I mean, I actually know where my 2012 tax returns are. It's like HELLLO Courtney you organized devil.

To keep the look cohesive we had the front of the cabinet next to the files look the same as the filing cabinets, but it actually functions as a double trash pullout. Obviously we don't generate that much trash in the office so we replaced the back bin with the shredder.

As we were planning this office Brent  had one specific request. He wanted the desk to lift up to serve as a standing desk should he want to work that way. Standing desks are popular right now as it is supposed to be really good for you to stand during the day as opposed to sitting hour after hour. To make Brent's dreams come true we divided the wood countertop into two sections, one for each of us, and had special lift mechanisms (Brent actually found them on-line) installed under each top. The desks sit at normal desk height most of the time, but on the occasion that either of us decide we want to stand, we simply un-hinge the top, pull up and poof... the standing desk comes to life. Our respective sides have their own lift mechanisms so when one of us stands or sits it doesn't necessarily mean we both have to.

Since moving in to this house we have tackled a lot of projects and made a lot of improvements, but this space is definitely one of my top three transformations. Being organized and productive never felt so good!

DIY Curtain Rods

So, we finished our home office um.........6 months ago and I have yet to show you all the final results. Bad blogger, bad. I know...But I'm back today to redeem myself. Before I show you the fully finished space I want to tell you about one area we DIY'ed wayyy back at the beginning. The curtain rod. Before we painted the ceiling, stenciled the floor or even decided to turn the sunroom into a home office we had curtains on the brain.

There are windows on the entire left wall of the room in addition to the back wall with glass doors that go out onto the back deck. Our concept was to install a curtain rod that would run along both of these walls so we could install curtain panels to cover all windows should we ever choose to. In general, we wanted to keep costs low on this project and we realized this may be difficult given the custom sizing and orientation of the rod, so we decided to try and tackle it DIY style.

We found some cool stair rail supports at Home Depot and decided these would work perfectly to hold the rod. We bought 6 and installed them spaced out above the windows.

For the rod itself we bought a piece of rounded trim that Brent mitered for the turns. 

And then stained with a warm Ash stain. 

Once the stain had dried on the rods they promptly went into the yellow room (junk room/soon to be nursery) where they were stored until 6 months ago when the office was finishing up. Obviously this was not the plan initially; we had actually picked up four white curtain panels from Ikea when we were gathering the rest of the supplies for the project. But by the time the hardware was installed and the rod was stained we had decided to tackle the floors, and hanging the drapes PRE stenciling those floors seemed like the worst idea ever. Especially since the curtains are stark white. So we stored those bad boys too. 

Fast forward give or take a year and a half and the desks were installed, which meant the curtains along the window wall had to be custom chopped (courtesy of our in-family-seamstress Cindy) and up they went! 

The new desk cabinets (yet to be revealed) run along the window wall so the three panels on this wall were cut to  rest atop the wood countertops. 

We were however able to keep the panel to the right of the glass doors full length which frames out this wall nicely. We really liked/like the look of the stair rail mount holding the wooden rod, but because the rod is screwed to the actual mount getting the curtains on the rod took a bit of finagling, but it was well worth it. 

It's super fun to sit back and appreciate a project so long in the making. The curtain rods + curtains are only one small part of the big picture of this space, but we are really happy with how they turned out. Full reveal coming soon. PROMISE!

Three Checks on the Baby Front

As of yesterday I am officially 22 weeks along! 

Speaking of the baby, word on the street is babies like to have a place sleep once they are born and come home from the hospital.  Whoa! Who knew!? This whole parenting thing has surprises around every corner. Kids these days.....

Kidding...

Somewhere around 20 weeks, which is technically the half way point, it occurred to us we might need to get cranking on the baby's room. We figured if the second half of this pregnancy goes half as fast as the first half, December will be here before we know it. Of course we've been tossing ideas around for a few months, but we were a whole lot of talk and pretty much zero action. But that all changed once we decided to get at least a few balls rolling and before we knew it we had managed to get three decisions checked off our list...

1. The room:

We have decided to make the "Yellow Room" the babies room.

Ooooh the yellow room....don't we all have one? Please God say the answer to that question is yes. For anyone that has been to our house at any point in the 2 1/2 years we have lived here you know this room as the world's largest catch all AKA the junkiest room in our house. The room where the door is always shut and the contents are always partially unknown. This room was actually a child's room for the family that lived here before us (hence the yellow paint) and really just made the sense for a nursery. It's the smallest of the bedrooms in the house and is complete with  two windows that bring in great natural light and a tiny little closet that will look so cute holding tiny little clothes.

It's been a scary no mans land for long enough and we are excited to transform it in to a fun environment for our mini Shearer. We have already started cleaning it out by throwing away, putting items on Craigslist and in a few weeks we are headed to Rome with a giant load for a yard sale. Once we can see the floor in it's entirety I think we can really start making some traction.

2. The wall color:

With the room selected it was time to figure out a color scheme and vibe for the space. We are not finding out the sex of the baby which is SO fun and exciting but also a bit limiting when it comes to decorating a room. We both agree we want to create a fun, happy space that feels like a natural extension of our home; a room that can grow and evolve with the baby without us having to completely revamp the space in a year or two. So, instead of creating a nursery that is decidedly "baby" we want to create a kids room that a baby can live in and then grow into a toddler and so on. With all of that being said we have decided that no fun, happy room is complete without...... white walls!?!?

I know white may seem like a drab choice, but DON'T WORRY! We already have some plans rolling around in our heads to bring a whole lot of fun and color to the space. I just think a nice clean neutral backdrop is the perfect starting place to kick the yellow room to the curb and prepare the space for any and all colors that might come it's way.

3. The crib:

We are playing with the idea of using the crib Brent used when he was a baby which is the same crib Cindy, his mom used when she was a baby. Here is a picture of Brent in the crib a few years back....

He doesn't seem to love the crib, but we are hopeful the baby will give it a chance ;)

It came up from South Georgia a few weeks ago and we have been working on it. If we can ensure we can make it safe for a baby born in 2015 then we are really excited to use it and love the idea that we will get to give it new life and a fun fresh look.
